Testing Email Deliverability

A common question asked through Profiler Support is how to improve your email / bulk mail deliverability. This document outlines what we in Profiler Support have done to test and improve email deliverability.

Step 1 – Have a Test Client

If you do not have a test client – create a test client in your Profiler System. You can do testing against this client.

Step 2 – Using Mailing Test

Go to www.mail-tester.com

Upon going to the website it will give you an email address (as per above) – copy this email address and go to your test client in Profiler and set this email address as your Email 1 address for this test client.

Don’t close this tab or window.- you will need to come back to it.

Step 3 – Create test Mail Out

After updating your test client with the email address – go to your Test Client and the Mailing List tab. On this click Create New Ad-Hoc Mailout.

This will create a mail-out for the client and the client only. Choose the Mailing Type and give it a Description (ie. Test SPAM check October 2021)

Click Save Changes

Step 4 – Send the Mailing to Mail-Tester

Then go to Reports > Export Mail-Out and select the Mail-Out you just made

Click Load Mail Out and on the next screen with the Output Format choose the method you wish to send the email and send the email out as per normal and it is only to the 1 person that was created on the ad-hoc mailout

View the Results

Maybe wait a minute or two here , and then go back to your mail-tester.com window and click the Then Check Your Score button. The email you had sent on the test in Step 4 above will now be with mail-tester for your result.

This will give you a point score out of 10. There may be things that need to be improved. If you scroll down, it will give you a break down of the things that can be improved in your email template to stop the spam score being low.

You can probably fix a number of items on the list, Profiler Support can help you with some of the items on the list if you need some explanation but others you will need to speak to your IT or marketing support to help improve the deliverability.

If you need make the changes to your template to try a better score:

  • Make the changes to the template and update it.
  • Go back to Step 4 (you don’t need to re-create a new mail-out) in this document
  • Use Step 5 and re-send the email
  • On Mail-Tester click Refresh and the latest email will be analyzed.
